Azure Connectivity issues in North America

During daily monitoring activities, Sitecore Cloud Operations engineers found an issue with Microsoft Azure due to which some of the Managed Cloud & xDB Cloud customers in North America may have experienced degraded performance, network drops, or timeouts when accessing Azure resources.

Affected Sitecore Cloud Service: Sitecore Managed Cloud & xDB Cloud customers.

Customer identification: Few Managed Cloud customers & xDB Cloud Customers hosted in the North America region.

Issue Description: Through Azure status page we have learnt that Azure Resources hosted in North America Region may have experienced degraded performance, network drops, or timeouts when accessing Azure resources. Customers may also have experienced downstream impact to dependent Azure services. This is due to a networking event between Azure and a third-party ISP resulting in network connectivity degradation.

Impact: The issue occurred between 09:45 and 16:26 UTC on 12 Dec 2019 to a subset of customers hosted in the North America Region.

Updates Summary

Resolved: Azure engineers mitigated the impact by bringing down the affected peerings between Azure and the third-party ISP and failed over network traffic. Azure engineers will continue to investigate to establish the full root cause, which will be published on Azure status page within 72 hours.
